October 2018: Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1991)

AHOY!

Friends of the revolution it is time for the greatest month of the year, October! Yes indeed the air will be brisk! The leaves will be crunchy! The apples will be delicious and those hoodies quite comfortable! Provided you live in an area where you have seasons. I do not.

You are not here for an ode to the season, though. Oh, no! You are here for our Yokoi Kids game of the month. We “boys in the back room” thought it might be fun to pick something a little spOOky but a lot of the most obvious suggestions, like Belmont’s Revenge or Kid Dracula, fall outside of our price guidelines. After a little mulling on the topic we’ve decided on Gremlins 2, a game based on the more comedy of the two comedy/horror classics. I’m calling both of them classics. Deal. With. It.

Grab a copy and join us! It looks to be a fairly cut and dry platforming romp through the Clamp building with nice graphics and decent music! As always ANYONE can submit ANYTHING related to or inspired by the game! Send us a review, draw a picture, remix music, etc. Check out past games for examples. Have fun!  -IF

September 2018 – Hunt For the Red October (1991)

huntfortheredoctober

Awesome! We get to play a spooky October-Halloweeny type game for September. Wait, it’s a game based off a movie based off a Tom Clancy book? Well shucks. It’s definitely a weird pick by Chris Tuttle, who had this to say about the game.

———————
Looking back on it, it’s strange that little 9 year old Chris would choose Hunt for the Red October as one of my few gameboy games to own. I don’t think I had heard of the movie and I definitely hadn’t read the book. Tom Clancy, Sean Connery, and Alec Baldwin would have been completely meaningless to me at that age. So what drew me to purchase that game over any of the many others available at the Sears or Macy’s video game department?

I think it was the submarine. In the early 90s I wasn’t logging onto GiantBomb or even reading video game magazines to get reviews of games before buying them. All I had to go on was the cover art, and maybe one or two tiny screenshots on the back, depending on how patient the store clerk was to pull boxes out of a locked glass case for me. The red and black submarine on the box cover must have just called out to me as “cool”.

The game was hard, or I wasn’t coordinated enough for it. I remember playing it a lot, but only the first and second level. That’s  something of a recurring theme with the games I played as a kid, and without any FAQ or game guide, once I was stuck, I stayed stuck. Speaking of which, let me know when Yokoi Kids gets to Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I didn’t have any strategy for taking out other subs vs boats vs planes, and just relied on reflexes to dodge and shoot. That probably has a lot to do with why my entire game experience for this was about a level and a half.

At some point I must have talked about this game with my Dad because I remember him telling me about the Caterpillar Drive and how it made the Red October a near-undefeatable super sub because it was invisible to radar. In the game, this translates to a somewhat mediocre temporary power-up,  which is something I feel was done a lot converting fictional power fantasies into playable video games. Why would extending Wolverine’s claws drain his energy!?

Anyway, I’m excited for this opportunity to go back and revisit a childhood favorite to see if it holds up to my memory as a challenging but fair game or if it’s a broken frustrating mess. I hope you Kids enjoy!

Lucky for you folks this game is extremely cheap and it’s the Tubthumping of Gameboy games. No, not because it’s awesome. Because you can basically find it everywhere. I see this game in every used Gameboy game shelf. Get it and talk about it why don’t ya? –RV

August 2018: Donkey Kong Land

gb_donkeykongland

This months game was picked by Josh Adams. It’s the 1995 game Donkey Kong Land! At first I was like “Dude, Josh? You picked a port of an extremely popular SNES port? What the Hell!? This is Yokoi Kids, not Sloppier Handheld Version of Popular Game Kids! What’s next Josh? Ducktales!?”.

After I cooled down I did some research. This game is a very tongue and cheek self aware port. The gameplay is the same but the levels are very different. It’s got some sweet 8-bit stereo songs by David Wise. And it has some wild enhancements when you put it in the Super Gameboy.

Josh had this to say about the game:

I have a lot of memories playing that one and trying to beat it on car trips. I borrowed it from someone I went to school with, who didn’t really care about it because they had a Nintendo 64, however, I was never allowed a game console, I just had a Gameboy. I remember thinking it looked so good & it was crazy hard. Especially the mine cart levels. I did eventually beat it, which was the first time I ever beat a video game.

Okay Josh, you win. Please don’t open the package I angrily mailed you yesterday. It was full of live bees. I just realized that the bee’s would probably “bee” dead by the time they reached Australia. I hope you enjoy the dearly departed bees.

And I hope you kind folks enjoy Donkey Kong Land. It’s of course under $10 and you can download it on the 3DS shop. So send us some submissions or just let us know what you think. Thanks! -RV

And it’s still not too late to send us your submissions or thoughts on Nemesis!

July 2018: Nemesis (1990)

nemesis

Ever heard of the horizontal space shooters Gradius or Darius? Well this is Nemesis! Which is basically just a Gradius game. Five levels, awesome music and hard as all get out. It might be nice if there were some cheat codes for it.

This game was picked by Matt Wissig aka Angrylanks and he had this to say about it.

“I enjoy traveling, but haven’t been to Easter Island. What better way to get there than by space travel? It’s best to keep your options open in life. (Two of them to be exact.)”

Of course it’s under $10 but unfortunately it’s not on the 3DS store. So Borrow it or bootleg it, baby!
