“Are Those Panties?” -Rick V.

A quick little unevenly spaced comic.
I do love Parodius althought I absolutely suck at it. It will keep at it up to retirement.

Konami Korner Store – Edgard Rodriguez

I’ve always loved video games, but handheld consoles have a special place in my heart, especially my Game Boy, where I spent countless hours playing my favorite games. Now that I’m forty, a husband, and a dad of three, I’ve realized how important it is to balance my time and be available. Opportunities for gaming will always be there, but I can’t be selfish with my time. Handhelds are perfect for me because I can pick them up, play for a bit, and easily head to sleep mode if I’m needed. I’ve already shared a lot about myself through my Multi-Mole-Verse of Madness poster and my Yoshi’s Cookies recipe (which was just a sugar cookie recipe), so I’ll leave it at that!
The recent news about Game Informer closing made me nostalgic for magazines I loved in the past, like EGM, GamePro, and Tips & Tricks. One of the best parts of those magazines was the outrageous ads. Inspired by this, I decided to create an ad that could have appeared in those magazines during the late ’90s to early 2000s. I imagined a “Konami Korner Store,” styled like a Circle K convenience store, which I thought would be awesome. I put together some snacks, wrote an over-the-top, rad ’90s-style ad, and designed a poster on Canva (though I still need to improve my Canva skills). Seriously, the snacks are delicious, so I recommend everyone check them out!
Edgard Rodriguez’s first console ever was and NES however, his hobby of video games began on the original Game Boy where he delved into Wario Land, Kirby’s Dream Land, Metroid II and Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Besides playing games he loves cooking, horror movies and reading. Hunt him down on Bluesky – Hyperpig.bsky.social
“Penguin” by Alex Mendizabal

While my horizontal shooter skills are pretty weak, I wanted to contribute a little drawing inspired by this month’s game. I mean, if a penguin flying around and shooting in space doesn’t get your creative juices going, what else can?
Alex is an animal rescue worker in Oslo, Norway. When not hanging out with his wife, 11 month old son, and 13 year old dog, you can find him skateboarding or ordering more paper for his Game Boy printer. @mendi.draw.bal
September 2024: Parodius (1992)

The Yokoi Kids HQ has been a little quiet since Johnny and Erik moved out and all the contributors have stopped coming by. Nolen, Ian and I sat around one of those giant cable spindles that we now use for a table. Since we haven’t had many contributors lately, we had to pick the game for September but we just couldn’t agree. I had such a great time with Amazing Penguin that I wanted to play another penguin related game. Ian was not satisfied with Xenon 2 and wanted to play another space shooter. Nolen was just happy with anything that was fun and cute and not insanely difficult. This threw Penguin Land off the table. As we were bickering, a letter slipped through the clubhouse door. We were shocked because we haven’t received mail in over two years. Ian picked it up off our dusty floor and read it.
“Oi! I’m Gerald from the UK. I know you lot have done away with your gimmick of only picking games under $20 USD, so why not pick a game that was popular here in Jolly Ol’? I suggest me and me grans favorite game Parodius!” Oh how much I loved eating bangers and mash with me gran play Parodius on the Game Boy Colour. Anyway, pick it. It’s a goody!”
After we looked up why Gerald spelled “Colour” like that, we checked out Parodius. I’m sure you folks know that the game is a “parody” of Gradius, mashing up many of Konami’s little guys like penguins, the Vic Viper from Gradius, and Twin Bee from… Twin Bee (aka Stinger). From what we’ve played of it, it’s a fun little shooter. So, thanks Gerald!
Parodius is not that expensive but please feel free to emulate if you got the means! Tell us what you think and get some contributions going. –Rick
