July 2023: Ninja Gaiden Shadow (1991)

Summers are hot, but do you know what’s cool? Ninjas. Let’s celebrate this immutable fact by playing Ninja Gaiden Shadow in the shade with a tall lemonade.

It’s a weird little number! Ninja Gaiden was red-hot on the NES like anything ninja-related was in the late eighties. It would make sense to get it on the Game Boy, where it should be a sure success. For whatever reason, though, there aren’t a ton of copies out there. Maybe ninjas were fading from the zeitgeist. Maybe it’s because it’s not actually a Ninja Gaiden game! It’s a Shadow of the Ninja game in Japan, rebranded as Ninja Gaiden Shadow over here. Clever! This explains why it’s missing some key elements.

By all accounts it’s a pretty good game! I love Shadow of the Ninja on the NES, so I can’t imagine I’ll be disappointed. Have fun with it AND WEAR SUNSCREEN. -IF

AND FOLKS! We certainly don’t want anybody paying $40 for a copy of this game. There a about a thousand ways to emulate it and we 100% approve of that. And the well of content we posted had done dried up! We want contributors new and old! Get on it! -RV
